10th Anniversary Show March 23 in Stockholm

The Genuine Fakes 10 years

If you’ve been following us on Facebook, you already know that we’re doing a show on Wednesday at the Southside Cavern in Stockholm to celebrate our first decade as a band. When we started out in that basement room at Södermalm, just a stone’s throw from this venue, we had no idea we would still be around ten years later. But here we are, and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and come out to our shows and bought the music. Therefore, we invite everyone to this free event on March 23. We’ll be playing songs from the past, the present and the future! Opening up for us is our good friend and great songwriter Thure. See you there!

20.30 – Thure

Thank You Turku!

We had a great time this weekend with our new-found Finnish friends. The Wonderminers and The Sugarrush put on good performances, and Vesa and Mikko were excellent club hosts. Somehow we just knew that a club called Flavor of the Month would be great! 😉 We hope to be back soon again!

Here’s a little clip of us doing “Irreplaceable”, courtesy of Petri from The Wonderminers.

First show in Finland!

On September 3 we’re heading over to Turku, Finland to play at Flavor of the Month – a powerpop club at Pikku-Torre. It’s our first show outside of Sweden, so we’re pretty psyched. Joining us on this evening are Finnish powerpop bands The Sugarrush and The Wonderminers. The Sugarrush covered The Posies‘ “Chainsmoking in the USA” on Beautiful Escape: The Songs of The Posies Revisited, to which we also contributed our version of “Somehow Everything”.

More info about the show can be found here.

Check out “Stereo” by The Sugarrush!

New album sessions

Today we enter the studio to start recording the new album! We’re going to try and get the live stream working at thegenuinefakes.tv so you can hang with us. However, we’ve got limited 3G connection down there, and no wifi yet, so it might not run as smoothly as we’d like. Keep your fingers crossed!

We’re going to do it like we’ve always done it – DIY style. We’ve got our own studio and our own gear and we’re going to keep creative control over the whole recording process. We’ve toyed with the idea of taking in an external producer (and we might still do that for a song or two if need be) but after spending three years working on the last album we really know our sound and how to get the best results in the studio. We’ve hired our good friend and guru Per Björling to help out with setting up the drum mics, though. For the last album we recorded “Irreplaceable” and “Mindset” at Eastman Studios here in Stockholm and that drum session sounded best by far, so we’re striving to make this new album in the same fashion. If you listen closely to The Striped Album you will hear there’s a difference. It was quite tricky to get three different drum sessions sounding homogenous, but I think it turned out quite well in the end. Recording the drums is the most crucial part of the recording process so it’s important that we get it right straight away. Last time we had to scrap a whole session because of phase issues (such noobs, right?!) and start over from scratch. But it was just as well ’cause we weren’t completely happy with the arrangements anyway.

Well, we’ve got 15-odd songs to nail so we best get crackin’!

See you in the dungeon! 🙂

Flickr update – Basement gig photos

On Feb 12 we had a rehearsal studio farewell party. That is, we bid the rehearsal studio farewell, not the band :). We’d been rehearsing there in the basement since we started the band back in 2005, so we invited all our friends for some drinks and live music. We’ve uploaded some photos from that gig on Flickr. For those of you who saw us live during the first year of The Genuine Fakes’ existence, you’ll notice we’re wearing the original live outfits!
